A six-speed manual transmission is standard on the four-cylinder models, the E 200 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY[1], E 200 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY[1], E 220 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY and E 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY. The short-throw action and optimum matching of engine power, transmission ratios and final drive ratio provide optimum conditions for sporty yet fuel-efficient driving. In addition, a display in the instrument cluster supports a particularly thrifty driving mode.

The 4-cylinder model is available with an optional electronically-controlled 5-speed automatic transmission (standard for E 250 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY). It has two modes allowing either an economical or a sporty driving style. And you can intervene manually at any time.

The 6 and 8-cylinder models come as standard with the 7-speed 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission as well as the DIRECT SELECT lever on the steering column. The seven forward gears of the 7G-TRONIC allow for a larger ratio spread between lowest and highest gears and consequently smaller intervals from gear to gear. This provides a constantly optimised rpm level, lower fuel consumption and virtually imperceptible gearshifts. For faster mid-range sprints the 7G-TRONIC can skip several gears thanks to the multiple downshift function.
With the standard-fit DIRECT SELECT shift paddles n conjunction with the sports package and the M mode it is possible to change gears without taking your hands off the steering wheel. The location of the selector lever on the steering wheel also creates additional stowage space under the centre console as there is no shift gate there.
