The high level of safety is another of the B-Class’s strengths. The car design is based on the sandwich concept. In the event of a front impact the engine and transmission are able to slide away along the angled pedal floor below the passenger compartment.
The sandwich concept also means that the occupants have a slightly higher seating position in the B-Class than in a conventional car. This not only permits better all-round visibility, but also can be an advantage in a side-on collision.
Three-point seat belts are specified as standard for all five seats. The two front seats are also fitted with active head restraints, belt tensioners and belt force limiters. The two outer rear seats feature belt tensioners. Standard safety features for the B-Class also include adaptive front airbags and head/thorax sidebags (enlarged sidebags which can also protect occupants’ heads) for the front seats.
As an optional extra, windowbags and sidebags are also available for the rear. If the car is fitted with windowbags, the standard head/thorax-sidebags in the front are replaced by regular sidebags. The airbags are deployed selectively, which means that in the event of a side-on collision of a specific severity (exceeding the triggering point), only the airbags on the impact side are activated.
For optimal securing of a child seat, the rear of the B-Class is fitted with ISOFIX child seat attachment points with TopTether.
